Firmaliiga 5/2014, Solvalla

The second firmaliiga event this fall, at Solvalla quite close to the first one.

Close to #1 I should have had a better plan - I've just graced the control-circle and then looked in the wrong direction for some random big stone. Around 90 s lost.

#2-#3 quite OK. To #4 my route is probably too zigzaggy - less turns and leaving all the green areas to the left(north) is probably better. To #5 the paths on the left were apparently a bit clearer and faster? To #6 I was too high up the hill and didn't find the path.

#7-F is quite OK again.

Firmaliiga 4/2014, Nuuksionpää

Fourth firmaliiga event of the year yesterday at nuuksionpää in the Noux national park.

#1-#4 mostly OK, perhaps a bit slow/unsure running to #1.
#5 a lot of time lost here for some reason - maybe straighter along the #4-#5 line has less ascent/descent?
#6-#9 again mostly OK
#10 only major mistake - quite thick forest with low visibility, I wasn't high enough up on the hill, and ran through to the road behind the control before turning back and finding it.
#11-F OK.

Firmaliiga 2/2014, Kattilajärvi

The second firmaliiga event this spring was held yesterday at Kattilajärvi.

I was on the E-course, and had no major problems on 7 out of 8 legs.

On control #5 I managed to spend three times as much time as the best runner!? How is that possible..

First I took the wrong direction, by maybe 45 degrees to the right, out of #4 🙁
Then I mistook the hill close to #7 for the one on the #4-#5 line, and took the path at almost 90 degrees to my correct direction 🙁
When finally getting a grip on things again, around the 90-degree bend in my path, I think I am located somewhere north of the #5-#6 line, and I start to search for the control on the wrong hill 🙁

Firmaliiga 2013/6, Luk

The last firmaliiga event for this season was held yesterday at Luukki.

#1-#4 mostly OK
#5 very slow route choice through bad terrain with fallen and cut-down trees
#6 a small 1min loop to find the control
#7-#8 OK (a small loop on #7 close to the control)
#9 maybe +1min here again as I followed others to the left when the control was right.
#10 again followed others to the wrong control before finding my own, +2min maybe
#11-F slowest ever finish as I tried to figure out where it was...

Firmaliiga 2013/5, Solvalla

Flatter terrain compared to last week - easier to keep up the pace on the whole course.

A stupid mistake that cost maybe 2 minutes on #1 - otherwise mostly OK orienteering.

Firmaliiga 2013/4, Kattilajärvi

First firmaliiga event this fall. Overall very physically demanding with most controls placed high up on hills/cliffs.
#1 a bit of circling before finding the right control
#2 ok and safe route, but slow
#3-#4-#5 OK
#6 very long leg with one or two big hills in the way. A route-choice with more running along the road might have been better.
#8 I tried to plan a good route to this control on the way to #6, but other runners and poor judgement caused extra minutes wasted here also.

#1 ran up the wrong valley about 100m before realizing my mistake
#2-#6 mostly OK
#7 a slow route up the hill, more left through the forest or using the path would have been better
#8 a small loop to find the flag

#6 the organizers had placed this control incorrectly - more than half of the field did not find it.
#9 only major orienteering mistake here - looking for the control on the wrong hill for about 3 minutes before re-locating using the road.
#12 someone had stolen the control flag! By itself the small EMIT-control taped to a tree was hard to find.
#13 should have approached control from above, not below.

#1 when initially lost, should have continued to the road, re-located on map, and would have found control much quicker.
#6 approaching the control from above would have been better.
