Answers to questions people ask me frequently:

1. Where can I get/buy plans for an IOM ?

A number of IOM plans are available freely on the internet:

  • Triple Crown
a successor to the very successful Widget and Gadget designs. Designed by Mark Dicks.
  • Noux (see also: rudder, bulb
My own design, loosely based on the Triple Crown
  • Laerke
A design by Soren Andresen from Denmark.
  • Sliver and Arrow
    by Charles Detriche (FRA)
  • Vanquish
    by Daniel Sherman
  • Vision
by Markus Bast / freeform design

I’ve collected other design notes: rig plan (old), weight budget, rig comparison, sail measurements, hull hydrostatics

Craig Smith’s page has a nice downloadable rigging guide.

2. Which boat is the fastest ?

Most modern IOMs are very equal in terms of speed. Wide boats tend to do better in heavy weather, and narrow boats in light weather. Any design related difference in speed and handling will show up only if two boats are equally well rigged and tuned, and equally well sailed. In reality IOM races around the world are won with many many different designs of varying width.
