putting the antenna horizontally is probably best, there is almost no signal out the tip of the antenna. It really would be nice if Spektrum would do something intelligent about the antenna, it's cheap and fragile. Same looks to be true up to the JR 12 channel version. I guess that rc aircraft people want to see an antenna even if it doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the idea. I was able to make the modification myself last night. I mounted the antenna horizontally, similar to Olle and Winston's setups. I used 2 plastic pipe/electrical wire straps (3/8", but could have gone a touch smaller) and removed the 2 screws at the top of the RF board. I then secured the straps underneath the RF board using the original screws. Be careful about clearance for the closed case. The first time I closed the case, the bind/range test button was held down...something tells me that might have hurt my range just a touch :~)
Once I made some minor adjustments to the straps, the case closed without depressing the bind button.

Thanks again for the great idea. I can now throw my radio in my backpack without worry.

Hi Anders,

Thanks for the pics, I’ve now done something similar only taping the antenna to the inside of the case to keep it vertical. I’ve also replaced the voltage regulator & fitted 2600 mAhr batteries. I’ve had one outing in anger with the TX like this & it’s been fine.

Theoretically plastic does nothing to rf , but a rf engineer once told me to
place the plastic inside a microwave (and a small amount of water to keep the microwave alive)
If the plastic gets hot after 30 sec to a minute then its no good and will shield the ant if it stays cold or cool it is not aborbing energy and will be good to use in high rf areas. Mounting the ant on te pcb is obviously not good but fitting it one wave length away (2.3cm) will be great
